Lobsterfest 2010 - Coal or Propane?

Three years ago, my friend Jill mentioned the fact that she had never tasted lobster. I couldn't believe it and took it upon myself to have a lobster boil in her honour. Needless to say, St-Jean in Quebec is the perfect opportunity for some outdoor cooking. The cops leave you alone (as long as you're not breaking bottles on the street) and EVERYONE has the day off.

Unfortunately this year was the first time we ever had to deal with copious amounts of rain. But thanks to Vahan and the Sarkissian Financial Group we managed to secure a tent for some shelter. Mike Thomassin also needs to be mentioned as his family happily supplies the cauldron and the burner for the lobster every year, while yours truly supplies the BBQ.

Which leads me to the topic of today's Blog - do you prefer cooking over coal or with propane? Personally, I only started using coal for camping and some cook-outs in the past few years, and although it is a little messy...The results are awesome. Nothing tastes quite like a perfectly seared steak over some nice white coals. Propane is great for apartment living, it's clean, it's cheap, it's reliable! But I find it lacking in flavour and it is too easy to overdo your meat. Especially nowadays, there seems to be this move within the BBQ companies to build bigger, faster, hotter BBQs with "non-stick" ceramic covered grills.

I think that propane is here to stay, and hopefully, when it comes time for me to buy a new BBQ I'll be able to find one with real iron grills and some lava rocks (Old School! Yeah!) But I highly suggest if you are a hardcore BBQ person (notice I did not say "man") you need to go out and invest about 30-50$ in a small coal grill.

You won't regret it!

PS: I apologize for not cooking as often as I should considering the time of year, lately I've been attending many a BBQ instead of using my own. Please forward this to ALL of your BBQ buddies and don't forget to share on Facebook!
